Are vinyl gutter guards a good product?

Most gutter systems fall into the categories of: metal, vinyl/plastic, and filters or hoods. 

There are a variety of vinyl gutters and protection systems produced. But, there are a few drawbacks to this material.

-Vinyl will eventually be worn down with high sun exposure. More times than not, vinyl gutters will come with “UV Resistance” claims. But, direct sunlight is very harsh on the vinyl. Experiments have proven that the sun degrades the important chemical bonds in vinyl, making gutters and gutter protection systems easily breakable. When combined with hot, summer days or cold, winter nights, these vinyl products won’t last very long.

-Rodents can chew through the vinyl products. Mice, squirrels, rats, and other small creatures can work their way into your gutters, building nests, and blocking the flow of water. 

-Snow and ice accumulates easily on vinyl. The heavy weight of snow and ice often forces these substances into the vinyl gutter, resulting in permanent deformation. Usually, this results in having to pull the gutters out and throw them away. 

-Vinyl deforms easily. High sun exposure often melts and deforms these vinyl gutters. In addition, metal gutter protection systems warp fairly easily, resulting in gaps. This leads to debris coming in, blocking the gutters, and a disaster. If you do have to remove them, they usually become permanently deformed, making it basically impossible to re-install. 

Another quick point- there’s a relatively new product on the market called gutter stuffers. These are pre-formed and pre-cut “sponge”-like material that you can shove into the gutter. While being less expensive, they do have some downside, notably:

-They hold on to particles like shingle grit, pollen, dust, and small composting material. The water ends up not draining properly, causing it to overflow and backflow under your roof.

-The spongy material traps moisture, creating a perfect environment for mold, insects, and mosquitos. 

-Sun exposure can cause them to crumble and decompose, making it very difficult to remove.

-If getting them out of the gutter is close-to impossible, imagine trying to clean them. 

If you keep in mind why you’re getting a leafless gutter system, the whole point is to not have to clean them. Both vinyl gutter protection systems and gutter stuffers leave you with more mess in the end. 

Do gutter guards stop all debris?

If there’s an opening, small debris can always find a way through. Leaves, pine needles, and other small items will sneak inside. This debris will remain hidden until your gutters suddenly overflow.
